Fort Miley Veterans’ Hospital 1934

 Fort Miley/
 VA Medical Center

Fort Miley is situated on 29 acres of a former Army reservation. The mission of the original military garrison was part of the seacoast defense of San Francisco Harbor.

In the early 1930s, the Parade Ground area of Fort Miley was selected as the site of a new Veterans’ Hospital and a twenty-one building VA Medical Center campus was completed in 1934.

The U.S. Army decided to abandon batteries at Fort Miley in 1937, but the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 lead to immediate reactivation and veterans were evacuated from the VA Medical Center until 1946.

In 1963, the Medical Center was awarded a grant to modernize the campus, including construction of new 440-bed hospital that was completed in 1976. In 1981, the San Francisco VA Medical Center was determined eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Renovation and seismic upgrading was begun in 1990 and construction since then has included a 120-bed nursing home.

Today, the Fort Miley/VA Medical Center is the major health care facility for veterans from San Francisco to the Oregon border. It is within easy walking distance; about six blocks from the Seal Rock Inn.
